Bisrat Abebe

Part-Time Faculty


Bisrat Abebe is a licensed independent clinical social worker whose passion is supporting the emotional and intellectual development of young adults. He is currently the Assistant Dean of Student Support Services at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) where he works directly with undergraduate students in a counseling and advocacy role. Bisrat has spent his career providing crisis intervention and mental health support to individuals and families in communities, behavioral health clinics, and hospital emergency room settings. Prior to working in higher education, Bisrat was the Area Program Manager for the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families in Springfield, MA.  He also served as Director of Young Adult Programs for Massachusetts Department of Mental Health and Director of Mental Health Program at Suffolk County House of Corrections. In addition to his clinical work, Bisrat has taught social work practice courses at several local universities over the past 6 years. These include: Perspectives on Severe Mental Illness, Mental Health and Mental Illness, Social Work with Communities and Organizations, Social Work Generalist Practice, Strengths Based Practice with Families, Intergenerational Strengths-Based Practice with Individuals. In 2005, Bisrat obtained his MSW in Clinical Social work and MA in Pastoral Ministry from Boston College where, until recently, he served as member of Alumni Board of the School of Social Work.
