BCIBC exists to enhance leadership business connections between Boston College, Ireland, and continental Europe. These connections allow innovative, entrepreneurial ventures to grow between Boston and Europe through Ireland, enhancing economic prosperity for both communities. The Kennedy Summer School (KSS) is part of BCIBC’s U.S. programing, and in Ireland it occupies the first full weekend of September and St. Michael’s Theater in New Ross. This festival of US and Irish politics, history, and culture, is an outstanding vehicle for Boston College to engage U.S. and Irish leaders. This year the GLI hosted the KSS Business Lunch with a Fireside Chat featuring Phil Hogan, Ireland’s European Commissioner. Since the summer of 2019, the GLI’s Director serves as program director of the KSS along with Larry Donnelly, Professor of Law at NUI Galway, and Eileen Dunne of RTÉ News.

Formerly, Wild Geese Network of Irish Scientists (WGNIS), The Ireland America Science Forum (IASF) was created in 2019 to strengthen existing and build new connections among scientists in North America and Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. By disseminating information on funding and employment opportunities, enhancing bi/multilateral partnerships through representation, promoting mentorship of Irish students and scientists in academia and industry, IASF provides a forum for discussion and representation in trans-Atlantic science activities and policy.

This program with the U.S. Department of State, International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Bureau, under the Merida Initiative, brought Internal Affairs officers for each of Mexico’s 31 state police authorities to the U.S. to work with the GLI. Programing focused on civilian oversight and police-community relations, and draws on faculty and staff expertise from across Boston College. The GLI delivered five cohorts from 2018-2019. This program partnered with the Boston Police Department, the Boston Mayor’s Office, Police Ombudsman of the City of Boston, Seattle Police Department, and Seattle University. In addition, Boston College’s Mexican Association of Students, Latin American Business Club, and the Organization of Latin American Affairs organized a lunch time discussion with the police participants on Mexican-US relations.

Over the past two years the partnership with Digital Skills Global (DSG) came to fruition with the launch of the first ever Boston College Global Leadership Institute Digital Skills non-credit certificate program. This partnership was designed to connect globally dispersed, mid-career executive level students to online digital skills non-credit certificate programming. DSG is headquartered in the Digital Hub in Dublin and connected closely with Ireland’s high-tech and financial services industries. Boston College faculty served as advisors with input to direct curriculum and instructional design.
In cooperation with the Consulate General of Ireland in Boston, the GLI launched the “Ireland at Boston College’s Leadership Fireside Chat Series” in February 2020. The series builds on a previous “Fireside Chat” forum organized by the GLI, that emphasizes three themes: Ireland’s special role as a leader in creating economic partnerships between the U.S. and Europe; its part in tackling global challenges; and enhancing peace and reconciliation in Northern Ireland while promoting North-South and East-West cooperation through the U.S.
